Personally, as someone from the EU whose Job is heavily involved in IP Law in general, I approve of this, while also seeing alot of points and concerns either being only partially tackled, or not at all. The "satire-Loophole" for Deepfakes is something where I see a lot of room for plausible deniability in for bad actors and hope it will be improved upon for instance. Also while state surveillance is certainly tackled, corporate surveillance is not, and is a crucial topic in my eyes. 

But, nonetheless, it is a good step towards the right direction of legislation in my eyes and hope it will be improved upon further, which it very likely will be, as this is only "the groundworks" or "baseline".

I'm generally in favour, it seems to be well advised/informed and clearly well motivated as it is trying to interpret the EUs position that a person is the ultimate owner of their data and has the right to sell it or withdraw it. It is quite balanced in the sense that it is trying to preserve people's right to their data but also realising that outlawing things like web scraping for research is something that would completely stunt technological development. Opt out datasets are the only realistic solution to this.It also lists purposes for developing large models that are forbidden, and those that you are obligated to inform the EU that you are developing. All very sensible. I genuinely think this act and others like it is where the EU is genuinely leading the world.

Whatever the US's equivalent to this act will be, I frankly don't think it will be as good as this one. I fear that the US government will basically find a way to restrict people's access/rights to their own data, but be very vigilant about copyrighted IP for corporations. I expect it will not be easy for individuals to object to their data being used, but for art owned by Disney etc there will be a huge market for training rights. Basically profit over people (most western democracies are deteriorating into this but the US is furthest gone). I can't see US legislation being that beneficial to AI development if it does go like that though; they would basically be betting on private powerhouses like Alphabet and Open AI, and the open source/weights will move to China. Big mistake because other, non giant, tech companies aren't going to want to just use an API and let Google/OpenAI control their data science research. They will use open source models and alter/fine tune them. It will be yet another case of the US ceding power to China.

I think it's good. No matter what you think about AI, big companies are dicks, there's plenty assholes who use AI to inflict harm (fake news, scams the works)and regulations and common insights for these sort of technologies are important to prevent abuse of AI. 

And I'm not just saying this because or my general Anti stance. I believe all major tech and stuff in digital areas should be transparent in how they work: cookies, algorithms, what data is collected by websites and how stored data is used and what not.

But what will eventually make it a minefield is when it starts interacting with the revised Product Liability Directive, and the upcoming EUDI wallet. I'm not a lawyer, but usually states are allowed to pass legislation as long as it is at least as restrictive as federal regs.

I would work to keep things very simple and use common language as much as you can. With respect to the pdoom thing, make it a very understandable and simple example. You might also want to, in simple terms, explain that even the "good" outcomes are in many ways horrific.

Thats the messaging. As for the delivery, if you have the time to follow up with phone calls, do that. They get a lot of letters. Also letters with signatures of respected people in their district go much further than your letter will with just your name on it.

Personally I was homeless or living in transitional housing for over 8 years and I taught myself all I could about artificial intelligence. As a result I pulled myself out of a dangerous and horrible situation improving my life.

Artificial intelligence has created work in the data annotation field and that is where I focused my efforts.

Personally I like to think I am exceptional, but if I can use AI to navigate homelessness, then why would not others be able to as well? Could they not escape much worse scenarios, like war, conflict, climate change, etc.

One project I thought AI could take on which would require linguistic data anyone with a cell phone could provide was linguistic analysis and study. In linguistics it is difficult to study unwritten languages which account for a large portion of language which is spoken. This would offer anyone with a phone the ability to gain at least a small income while at the same time preserving their cultural heritage.

This is part of the reason I make all of my teaching material free on my website. I want to offer to others the same path that I took.

How AI is used. Is it used by the few to amass more wealth, or does it remain accessible to all, allowing even the people at the bottom of society to pull themselves up.

This is part of the reason why I develop local LLM applications and foster that type of community involvement in the LLMDev space. Local LLM development ensures that the technology is accessible to all and democratizes access to the technological advantage an individual can reach if they teach themself with all of the free and accessible information.

As a social worker you must be aware of the problems associated with poverty and how world events have thrust millions from war, climate change and migration into a desperate situation. Will AI be used just to make drones that eliminate of these "disposable people" or will it offer the possibility and hope for a new life of prosperity?

That is what anyone wants. The ability to provide an income to support themself and the people who depend on them. AI offers that possibility. At least it has for me. Am I just exceptional or can anyone follow my path? I guess that has yet to be determined, but I am sure you will find other stories of people who have used AI to improve their situation in life.

So how do we ensure that AI becomes a tool to help us "disposable people" and not just another weapon of war?

Social workers will be on the front line. If they are trained and know how to direct others to invest their time to study and develop the skills necessary in order to use AI to pull themselves up then they will be the ones working with the homeless, the war/climate refugees and migrants. They will be the ones who will be able to provide the resources to help these people.

I stopped counting meetings about AI and ethic where attendes have no clue of what is ethic, just some vague understanding based on good-bad, manicheean simpliste view.

You started to acquire some Technical and it is good.
After you need to understand two three things.
- what is data. Start with DIKW. BTW An AI don't UNDERSTAND. With that in mind you will understand a limit of AIs.
- the history of AI. It didn't star two years ago. The difference between the 50's and now is the data and the computing capability available. (And the énergie consumption)
- what is governance. Generaly speaking.
